How to Apply

Whether you are degree seeking or non-degree seeking, you will first need to apply to Western through the Office of Admissions. Please fully read the instructions below that fit your situation.

Then, you will need to apply to the Regional Law Enforcement Academy.
In order to be considered for admission to the LEA, an application file must contain the following:

  • A completed application with a $150 uniform/equipment fee and additional required information applying to your career interests. Please contact us at 816-271-5843 to have the application packet mailed to you or stop by the academy to pick up the application packet.
  • Official transcripts from all schools attended or results of GED, if applicable
  • Three letters of reference
  • Please mail the LEA application to: Law Enforcement Academy, Missouri Western State University, 515 North 6th Street, St. Joseph, MO 64501.

I only want to get my POST, and I want to start in the Spring of 2010

  1. Apply to Western as a non-degree seeking student, paying the $15 application fee.
  2. This means you will not be eligible for federal financial aid.
  3. Apply to LEA.
  4. Register for POL 150 (12 hours) for the Spring.
  5. Register for POL 100 (3 hours) and 130 (3 hours) during intersession and in the Summer.
  6. The total cost of the LEA program will be $4500.06.
  7. You will earn a total of 18 credits that can be applied toward a Criminal Justice degree. 

I want to get my POST and work toward an associate’s or bachelor’s degree

  1. Register at Western as a degree seeking student, paying the $15 application fee.
  2. This means you MAY be eligible for federal financial aid.
  3. Submit ACT scores or take placement tests to determine if you need to enroll in developmental coursework.
  4. Determine if you can simultaneously take developmental work and the LEA curriculum.
  5. If you cannot successfully complete both developmental work and the LEA curriculum (which is most likely to be the case), complete required developmental coursework before attempting the LEA curriculum.
  6. Apply to LEA.
  7. Register for POL 150 (12 hours) for the Spring.
  8. Register for POL 100 (3 hours) and 130 (3 hours) during intersession and in the Summer.
  9. The total cost of the LEA program will be $4500.06.
  10. You will earn a total of 18 credits that can be applied toward a Criminal Justice degree.
