JOB DESCRIPTION


Purpose:
To help individuals 17 years of age or older develop reading, writing, math and computer skills to meet self-identified goals

Site Assignment:

  • The location will be one that is convenient to the tutor and student/learner.
  • The Pass the Power tutoring center, any branch library or other public location is acceptable.
  • Meeting in private homes is not allowed.

Qualifications:
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and possess a high school diploma or GED. Volunteers also must:

  • Demonstrate good reading and writing skills
  • Be dependable and prompt
  • Interact positively with a diverse population
  • Be patient, flexible and friendly
  • Have a good sense of humor

Time Commitment:

  • Complete the Pass the Power pre-service training (approximately 12 hours)
  • Provide two to five hours of instruction per week to an assigned student
  • Provide a minimum of 15 hours of instruction to the assigned student within three months
  • Commit to a minimum of six months of tutoring

Responsibilities:
Encourage and support adult learners by:

  • Helping learners develop confidence and a positive attitude about learning
  • Treating learners with respect and involving them in decisions relating to their learning process and goals
  • Selecting materials and learning approaches appropriate to the learners’ abilities and needs
  • Praising the students’ strengths and accomplishments
  • Seeking to understand the psychological, emotional and physical problems that may cause adults to have learning difficulties
  • Meeting regularly and on time
  • Being prepared with a lesson designed to the needs and interests of their learners
  • Reviewing all homework completed independently by their learners each week
  • Keeping accurate and up-to-date records of their learners’ progress
  • Completing monthly tutor reports and turning them in by the 5th of the month
  • Notifying the program staff of any change in tutoring status, schedules or locations, as well as any change in address or phone numbers – learners or tutors

Required Training:

  • All prospective tutors must complete a 12-hour pre-service orientation prior to placement with a learner.
  • Active tutors must attend at least one of three Pass the Power Community Workshops each year.
